Burglar Proof your Car

This information is meant to be helpful, but of course provides no guarantee.

Ten Tips

1. Take the keys out.

2. Lock it.

3. Do not leave items in the car. Even if you know they were not expensive or perhaps have nothing in the box. The theif may not know this. For example many people get too tired to haul in all the gifts after Christmas shopping. If these are in site for someone looking into the car through the window, it is more likely to be broken into.

4.Stereo equipment, if it has a removeable front, remove it, that is what you paid extra for. Even if you just put it in the glove compartment or under the seat, but best to take it into the house or put in a purse.

5. If you have a camera on your house for security, park where the car can be seen.

6. Park in a well lit public area.

7. Consider using a secondary device to lock your car, such as a steering wheel or tire lock.

8. If you have a garage, park in it.

9. Get a security system for  the car.

10. Technology is getting cheaper every day, consider a camera with a recording device so if something happens you can look back at it and see who it was. Or from time to time, review the recorded parts to see if anyone has been obviously looking into your car that does not belong there.

11. If something happens, ask your neighbors if they have a camera that may have caught something. This may be after the fact, but perhaps will help with the next car or even getting yours back.

12.  Or consider a tracking device for your car. There is a new one that the cops use for the bait cars and it is available to the general public through dealers. It is not the lojack kind however that would also be better than no tracking system.

13. Shop around, ask friends, ask neighbors, recently a friend of mine had someone try to break into her home while her daughter was home on Thanksgiving and she immediatly called a security alarm company that would have cost her for a small home $40 per month for three years for monitoring and the system was "free".  With a few minutes on the computer, my husband found one that would do the same or better for only $130 for the system and we can likely find her someone to monitor it for $15 per month but this system will actually call up to 4 numbers for you anyway. So your really don't need the monitoring.
